Help with CourseWorks (Canvas)
CourseWorks (Canvas) is Columbia University's learning management system that offers a variety of tools and features in support of teaching, learning and collaboration. ATLIS can provide both basic troubleshooting assistance and in-depth site design support for Barnard courses. See below for common questions and support for specific audiences.
To clear up some common confusion: At Columbia and Barnard, the names CourseWorks and Canvas are often used interchangeably, and essentially refer to the same thing. Technically, Canvas is the brand name for the learning management system, and is the name used by others outside of Columbia University. CourseWorks is the name for the Columbia's specific set up of Canvas.
To access CourseWorks (Canvas), please navigate to courseworks.columbia.edu.
Faculty, students and staff should select "UNI login" and sign-in with your Columbia UNI and password. If you need to reset your password, please visit Columbia's manage my UNI page. You can also contact CUIT by email askcuit@columbia.edu or by phone at 212-854-1919.
If you don't need have a UNI but need CourseWorks access, please see the "Guest and Alum Access" section below.
Students can email atlis@barnard.edu for assistance with CourseWorks (Canvas). For general questions, you may also find the Canvas Student Guide helpful.
If you are a student and are running into a problem with a specific course, we recommend that you reach out to your instructor first to make them aware of the issue (as it may be affecting other students) and see if they are able to solve it. - Troubleshooting: Email us at atlis@barnard.edu with any questions or problems that arise when using CourseWorks (Canvas).
- Course Set-Up & Design: We can help you effectively use CourseWorks (Canvas) features to meet your courses' needs. Please feel free to request a consultation or email us at atlis@barnard.edu.
- Sandbox Sites: We can provide short-term sandbox sites for faculty who want to experiment in CourseWorks without it effecting an active course site.

If you need access to a specific course site in CourseWorks (Canvas) but do not have a UNI, you can be added to the course as a guest. Please email atlis@barnard.edu with the details of your request.
For alum auditing: Some alums have active UNIs, while others do not. If you don't have an active UNI, we can create a guest account for so that you can audit the course.
